Stylish Lunar New Year with Tamsin Amy

It's the Year of the Snake! 🐍  We spoke to Rotator Tamsin Amy, a content creator, interviewer, and founder of The Rhubarb Society, on her top reservations for celebrating Lunar New Year, and most importantly what inside her fashion rental wish list.

"I’m half Chinese and half English, raised in London, meaning I’ve been fortunate enough to experience and celebrate all of my Chinese New Year’s in this wonderful city I call home! My family speak Cantonese, so our greetings for the New Year are ‘Kung Hei Fat Choi’."

One Lunar New Year Tradition you swear by?
Definitely doing a ’spring clean’ before New Year and burning incense in all corners of the house. This helps remove stagnant and dead energy and makes room for luck and prosperity in the new year!

What's inside your rented saved folder for the New Year?
I’ve focused a lot of reds and golds (with some pinks for fun!) as they’re lucky colours for CNY. As it’s the year of the snake, I’ve also added in some texture in the way of snake print statement pieces. There’s also a few options that are inspired by traditional Cheongsam.

How are you celebrating the Lunar New Year this year?
The great thing about CNY is that it often includes multiple celebrations, so I’m doing a few different things! I have a tradition with my friends where I organise CNY celebrations, consisting of Dim Sum, cocktails at Opium Bar and some late-night Karaoke, so that’s one of my plans!

I also do a huge CNY lunch with family and family friends from all over the country, and the hardest part is trying to decide where it should be held, so that’s also on the cards (if a location can be agreed in time!). I’m also lucky enough to be invited to a few great CNY dinners through work so I’ll be celebrating with colleagues and friends in the industry too.

Top 3 London restaurants you'd recommend for Lunar New Year
OK, three is very hard, but I think I can *just* about narrow it down.

  1. For upscale Chinese, where the quality and taste justify the price, Mei Mei Mayfair (I quite like going there for solo lunch dates when I want to treat myself). It’s also in a beautiful Georgian townhouse in Mayfair, and it's immaculately decorated, so it feels very special to dine there.
  2. For incredibly tasty, home-cooked Malaysian Chinese Food, the C&R Cafe in Chinatown is the absolute best. I am addicted to their Laksas and Beef Rendang. The portions are huge, and it's very affordable.
  3. Finally, the Good Earth is a family favourite we’ve been going to since I was a child. They have a few restaurants around London, and whilst the food is elevated and the quality is fantastic, the atmosphere is always warm and relaxed, which is nice.
