A Glass Of Wine With Steve Dool

We spoke to the Head of Brand Partnerships at @depop about how the resale and rental marketplaces are revolutionising the industry, the importance of community building and how the right partnerships are a great way to take your brand to the next level. Here's a few of our key takeaways:

On not seeing Depop as an app sitting within the industry
"It's an enclosed eco-system in some ways, because people are starting their own trends and are not waiting for trends to be fed to them by a handful of people at the top, so that part of it is really empowering."

On the importance community and how to build it
"The community leads everything that we do [...] we're the facilitator of the community," Steve shares about Depop. "We're a social marketplace, so you can  follow sellers you like, you can comment, you can message them, so we're very much facilitating that interaction, which is the most important point about building a community. You need to have a place where the community can gather."

How they approach choosing partnerships at Depop
"We come from a community-first point of view, so we're looking at 'does this actually benefit anyone or is it just a cool brand alignment?' and if the answer is that it's just a cool brand alignment then we probably wouldn't do it."

What makes a great seller on Depop?
"Someone who takes their brand very seriously, someone who has a clear aesthetic and a direction for what they sell, someone that has something kind of unique in their photos. So all that makes you stand out on Depop and gives you a better chance at building a loyal following."
